Luke Bryan recently took time out of his day to surprise a very special 4-year-old boy who loves his music.
Riley, a young boy with Asperger’s syndrome from Upstate New York, recently attended the Luke Bryan concert in Saratoga Springs. At the show, Riley sported a t-shirt that read, “Luke Bryan Is One of the Pieces to My Puzzle,” a nod to the Autism Speaks saying “Until All the Pieces Fit.”
Riley’s mom Marjorie noticed Luke trying to read Riley’s shirt during the show, so afterward, she sent a letter to Albany, New York radio station WGNA to explain what happened at the show and how much Luke’s music impacts her son.
“When Riley pretends to be Luke, he is a whole other person,” Marjorie wrote in the letter. “He’s not afraid or shy. He has confidence and feels free. Every time Luke turned his hat around during the concert, so did Riley. On our way out of the show, Riley pulled me down and said ‘I didn’t know all the songs mommy. I need to learn all the songs.’ He just loves music. Sorry for such a long letter, but I just want Luke and all other artists to know that their music is a powerful thing and truly helps those with disabilities to express themselves and get through rough parts of their day.”
The station was so moved by the story that they passed it along to Luke and also invited Riley and Marjorie into the studio. While in the studio, Riley got the surprise of his life when Luke called in to speak with him.
“So listen, I remember reading that shirt from stage, and I just had never known that ‘You’re the piece to my puzzle’ was an autism statement,” Bryan explained over the phone. “I just remember reading it and thinking, ‘Well that’s an interesting thing to put on a shirt.’”
Like the radio station, Luke too was touched by Riley’s story.
“I’m kind of having some tears on the bus here. I’m very blessed in this business to have so much fun, and then when you know that things go to a whole ‘nother level of helping people, it just makes life even more special,” he said. “I’m glad I got to finally talk to Riley.”
Although Riley was a little shy, he confessed to Luke that his favorite song was “Play It Again.” The superstar didn’t hesitate to sing a few lines for Riley over the phone.
Before saying their goodbyes, Luke thanked Riley’s mom for sharing his story.
“Thank you for reaching out the way you did. It was inspiring,” he said. “We just pray for the fact that my music can make some stuff easier for you. It’s what it’s all about, and we love hearing it.”
