The Big 94.5 Country and 580 WIBW Radio are kicking off the National Night Out Against Crime at their studios August 8th, the night before the festivities begin, with a party.

Free hot dogs, music, and other festivities for the entire family will be available from 5 PM to 7 PM.

The National Night Out Against Crime organization aims to heighten crime, alcohol, drug and violence prevention and awareness. Safe Streets, along with the Topeka Police Department, Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office, the Shawnee County District Attorney, Target and many other neighborhood sponsors, aim to form a powerful partnership in the fight for a safer, crime– and drug-free community.

“This is very important because neighbors get to know each other,” said Judy Wilson, with Safe Streets. “This is sending a message to the criminals to let them know that the neighborhoods are organized and fighting back to get rid of crime.”

This year, more neighborhoods in Topeka and Shawnee County are participating than ever before. In 2012, 47 neighborhoods participated and this year there are 67 neighborhoods signed up for National Night Out festivities.

“Each individual neighborhood is in charge of planning their own event,” said Kristi Pankratz, director of Safe Streets. “A lot of neighborhoods will take on different themes. Some of them will include ice cream socials, street carnivals and other activities for the kids. We encourage all neighborhoods to make something that’s unique to their own.”

The kick off party is open to all and starts at 5 PM at the WIBW Studios, 1210 Executive Drive in Topeka.

Kicking Off National Night Out With A BIG Party Friday For The Community

by Shawn Wheat, WIBW News

National Night Out is about getting to know your neighbor.  There will be neighborhood parties Saturday all across Shawnee County.

The night before, we want you to get to know all your Shawnee County neighbors with our HUGE Kick-Off Party here at WIBW Radio.

Former Topeka Police Chief Ron Miller says it’s something everyone should participate in.

“It’s truly a based, community wide event.  WIBW does a great job of having the part on Friday night, before National Night out, in the parking lot that was started a year or two ago.”

The fun starts at 5 Friday, here at 1210 SW Executive Dr., in our parking lot with free hot dogs, snow cones, bounce houses, plus music and games.  All, 100% free.
