This afternoon, Swift hosted a worldwide live stream on Yahoo! to announce three things: a new single, a new album, and a new music video. The superstar, who made her country music debut with the song “Tim McGraw” in 2006, unveiled the lead single, “Shake It Off,” from her upcoming fifth studio album. She also announced that the album, entitled 1989 after the year she was born, will be her “very first documented, official pop album.”It appears Taylor Swift and country music are never ever getting back together…like ever.
It’s no secret that Swift’s music has become increasingly more pop-sounding with each album, but until now, she’s always found a way try to make it fit within the country music realm. Because she’s continued to distance herself from the genre, many fans will be happy to see her go. In fact, many will argue that she left country music a long time ago. Others might feel betrayed. After all, she did use country music as a platform to launch her career and now she’s officially categorizing herself as a pop artist. On the other hand, some fans will be excited to follow Swift on her new journey as a pop superstar.
This leaves us with so many questions. Is the end of era for Swift and country music? Now that she is officially making the move to pop, will her name stop appearing on the country music award show ballots? Will she ever be invited back to CMA Fest? Is she leaving forever? Only time will tell.
What do you think about Swift’s official move to pop? Are you happy to see her go, or sad that she’s leaving the genre that first gave her a chance all those years ago?
