Inspired by the ‘90s ascendance of new wave American metal bands like Pantera and Biohazard, Mastodon hit the ground running in 2000, quickly establishing themselves as one of the foremost metal acts of the 21st century. Their unique brand of sludge metal and intricately crafted odysseys held much promise for audiences seeking new horizons in metal, and the band delivered big with highly conceptual albums and electrifying live performances. With news of a new album in the works, Mastodon are primed to melt more faces on their 2014 tour.
Formed in Atlanta in early 2000, Mastodon released two EPs before making their album debut with 2002’s Remission. By the 2004 release of sophomore album Leviathan, the band had hit their stride, seeing their reputation swell as the album topped critics’ year-end lists. As the album’s songs received airtime on video games like Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland and Guitar Hero: Metallica, the band hit the road with Slayer and Lamb of God, further increasing their popularity with metal fans around the globe. Several more acclaimed albums would follow including 2011’s The Hunter, which peaked at No. 10 on the Billboard 200. With a new album slated for 2014, Mastodon are sure to be in top form on their upcoming tour dates.
